Information Management - Point and Click

Data Integration: What it means in the sawmill world

There are considerable amounts of data in a modern optimized sawmill, some might say too much. Now that every machine center is optimized, mill management has an arsenal of data that can provide key operating clues to help sustain a growing profit margin.

Interpreting the data is only half the problem, you've first got to get your arms around your mill's actual operating statistics, and do it in a timely way. We call it competitive process management.

Data Warehousing: It's all in one place

USNR's MillWide Web is a data warehouse that provides a way to collect, monitor and report on the status of your mill, at any point in time. It tells you what's happening at every machine center on a daily basis, or even an hourly basis. In fact, you could view mill production at any point in time and get a clear picture of your mill's production statistics, at a moment's notice.

MillWide Web is a professional solution to the complex problems of data collection and information management. It consolidates the mill’s many disparate data sources into one central database and provides management with real time access to it.

MillWide Web facilitates data comparisons from machine center to machine center by giving you direct access to optimizer data via the USNR optimization software. This feature allows management to more easily conduct long-term trend analysis.

PLC information can also be directly accessed via Ethernet. The MillWide Web solution also provides complete access to existing database solution information.

The MillWide Web uses industry standard Crystal Reports and can page you when production meets a scheduled target. It allows you to quickly and easily e-mail the report data to anyone, thus closing the information gap between the mill floor and the front office

MillWide Web is a professional solution to the complex problems of data collection and information management.

TECH UPDATE

If you would like assistance with installing these fixes, please contact USNR Customer Support at 1-800-BUY-USNR.

DST Changes Will Effect Production Reporting

Changes in the laws of the United States and Canada have changed the start and end dates for Daylight Savings Time. In 2007 Daylight Savings Time (DST) will start three weeks earlier on March 11, 2007 and will end one week later on November 4, 2007. These changes will not effect the operation of USNR optimization or controls systems; however, they will have an impact on production reporting dependant on shift start and end times.

Normally, the Windows Operating System automatically updates the time at the beginning and end of DST. Without installing a hot fix or otherwise updating the time zone settings, the operating system will not update the times until the traditional dates.

While it is possible to change the clock manually, this method is not recommended. Without installing the hot fix or updating the time zone settings, the operating system will automatically add or subtract an hour on the traditional dates.

Information on how to update time zone settings may be found at the following web sites. The fixes will need to be installed on all of the computers with Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Website for general information regarding the changes in Daylight Savings Time and how they affect Microsoft products: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_topissues#a2

Website to download cumulative Timezone fix for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Service Pack 2 must be installed prior to installing the fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836

Website to get instructions for Windows 2000 and Windows NT4. In most cases, method 2 should be used. Windows NT4 is not listed in this article, but other Microsoft sources indicate these steps will work under NT4 as well. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914387

NEW PROJECTS

USNR says Thank You to our customers for the new orders.

We appreciate your continued loyalty and pledge to continue earning it!

Britton Lumber has completed the start-up of a USNR 3D Smart TriCam edger optimizer on a new Valley Machine lineal edger. The top-only lineal scanning system utilizes three scan zones to capture dense surface data on Eastern White Pine. The mill is just beginning to learn what the new optimization system has to offer, and considers USNR to be very responsive to their needs.

Cascade Hardwoods in Chehalis, WA has installed an Inovec-USNR YieldMaster StereoScan carriage system upgrade that incorporates new computers with faster processors. The mill first began operations in 1961 providing pulp chips to local pulp mills. Today Cascade Hardwood produces high quality Alder, Ash, Birch and Maple hardwood lumber for the furniture and cabinet industries.

CMPC Maderas of Bucalemu, Chile recently ordered two 3D transverse Smart TriCam Cant and Edger Optimizer systems from USNR. The order also includes a PLC upgrade. The Bucalemu mill began producing in 1994, and has been constantly updated with the latest technology. Producing about 168 million bf per year of sawn radiata pine.

Great Lakes Veneer in Oswego, NY purchased an Inovec-USNR YieldMaster G3 StereoScan carriage system upgrade with hydraulics. The mill produces high quality rotary cut veneer products to be used in a variety of applications. The company saws about 50,000 board feet of 4/4 hardwood lumber daily. Most of its production is hard maple and cherry with some soft maple, yellow birch, red oak, and white ash.

The original company focus was on purchasing and reselling unprocessed veneer quality hardwood logs to the domestic and international veneer markets. But in the mid 90's, Great Lakes Veneer expanded into the green lumber sawmill business.

Joseph Audet of Ste Rose de Watford, Quebec has placed an order for an Inovec-USNR YieldMaster G3 with StereoScan for their existing headrig carriage. The mill is looking to increase recovery and production. They plan to use the recovery board and variable length features to feed their specialty products. Once the YieldMaster locates the desired opening face, the recovery board feature then searches for an extra board of a smaller dimension in the remaining slab, without sacrificing the opening face.

Pike Lumber Company has completed start-up of the new USNR 3D LASAR carriage optimizer system at the Carbon, IN facility. The company recently finished a similar start-up at the Akron, IN mill in November.

Pike Lumber distributes quality hardwoods to buyers in the cabinet, millwork, furniture, and musical instrument industries – companies who have exacting specifications for widths, lengths, color, inspection, and kiln drying.

Potlatch has ordered a USNR 3D lineal Smart TriCam scanning system for its mill in in Gwinn, MI. The order also includes log and cant optimizer upgrades to MillExpert. USNR's MillExpert system is the latest cutting edge optimization technology that offers a host of additional functionality including more flexibility over your product mix.

Scierie V.O.G. of Plessisville, QC has purchased a new USNR 72" bandmill for a linebar resaw system. The system is expected to help the mill further increase production and grade. Last September the mill upgraded its existing carriage with a USNR 3D LASAR scanning and optimization system for dramatic increases in recovery and grade. The carriage itself was also upgraded with new hydraulic cylinders, onboard hydraulic log turners and USNR controls that provide up to 20 inches per second of knee displacement. Other controls features include a saw blade deviation reader, automatic top guide, carriage drive speed and automatic return.

Tachikawa Lumber has relocated its sawmill from Hiroshima, Japan to Taicang, China. USNR Field Service Engineers, Warren Poprocki and Joe Shields were on hand to facilitate with the recomissioning of a USNR 6" bottom arbor 6-saw board edger along with a prepositioning infeed table.

Tachikawa Lumber cuts radiata pine from NZ to be made into furniture and shipped to U.S. "We found the people very cooperative and easy to work with," said Joe Shields who added, "Special thanks to Koji Tachikawa and Taizo Nakamura and all the crew. Best wishes for your continued success in China".
