BATTLE LUMBER GOES 3D

Battle Lumber Company is a family owned operation located in the small rural town of Wadley, GA about 150 miles SE of Atlanta. The company has kept pace with technological advances and is one of the most modern hardwood grade lumber and pallet manufacturers in the Southeast.

Founded in 1962 with a total employment of 8, Battle Lumber today has more than 250 employees. The mill site spans 462 acres accommodating three separate mills that together produce 4 million pallets and 90 million board feet of grade lumber annually. Battle Lumber also operates a hardwood flooring plant, and supplies chips to local paper mills in addition to offering hardwood byproducts for landscaping and fuel.

Recently Battle Lumber installed a USNR 3D LASAR scanning and optimization system on their Maxi Mill End Dogging carriage. Vice President, Tommy Battle said "The installation went real smooth. We're very pleased with the system."

Battle Lumber harvests logs native to their region, with red oak, white oak and poplar representing 80% of inventory. They also process ash, maple, and cypress. The mill runs a complex operation with so many different species and each requiring a different break down. USNR’s Carriage optimizer is extremely flexible, providing detailed breakdown rules that can be set for each species and fiber class. A unique advantage to this system is the auto-rotation function which maximizes value.

“We’ve seen dramatic increases in yield and production and hope to optimize our two other carriages with the same system,” Tommy explained. “We’ve already got a good bit of USNR equipment with a Hemco optimized trimmer, a green sorter and a Lunden stacker. On the dry side we’ve got a 100 bay Hemco sorter,” he added.

Battle Lumber was recently ranked the # 1 Hardwood Mill in the country for production at a single site by Timber Processing Magazine. And with the new 3D LASAR scanning system online and producing, Tommy Battle is feeling pretty good about things, for now.

PRODUCT FEATURES

USNR Sharp Chain links have been re-engineered to provide optimized performance and longer chain life.

USNR SHARP CHAIN is new and improved

USNR has recently redesigned its Sharp Chain incorporating decades of mill-tested knowledge to produce a higher-performance sharp chain that resists wear and tear.

The Dog links are made with an investment casting process that creates a smoother surface, which results in less wear on sprocket teeth. And it's trapezoidal shape provides a larger bearing area for longer chain life. Needle point dogs come standard, but several other tip configurations are also available.

Elongated Center links are machined from high-strength 4340 steel alloy. Lubrication holes have been added to keep pivot pins well lubricated, leading to longer service life. The pivot pins are induction hardened and chrome plated to make a hard, smooth contact surface.

Along with the chain links themselves, our machined drive sprocket, guide bar, slide rail and lubrication system all work together to maximize system life and optimize performance.

NEW PROJECTS

USNR says Thank You to our customers for the new orders.

Your continued loyalty is appreciated and we pledge to continue to earn it!

Anthony Timberlands of Beirne, AR has installed a USNR MillExpert Cant Optimizer upgrade to the GEO2 scanning system on their pin positioning 10” SA Schurman gang. The MillExpert optimizer replaced an old VAX system. Anthony Timberlands runs primarily 6” and 9” cants in a variety of species.

Beadles Lumber of Moultrie, GA recently ordered two USNR TriCam scanning and optimization systems from Cone Machinery. A Smart TriCam scanning and log optimization system was ordered for the sharp chain system and a full-coverage transverse TriCam scanning and optimization system will be installed on a new Edger.

Diamond West Lumber in Philomath, OR purchased a MillExpert optimizer upgrade for their USNR Edger Maximizer. Diamond West is a hardwood mill processing Alder up to 10' long in random widths.

Doncasters Medical Technologies of Oregon City, OR placed an order for Dynastar computerized maintenance management system.

Efficiency Production in Mason, MI ordered a USNR US-225 Lift Truck. The US-225 is part of USNR's Small Line family and is rated for 22,500 lb. side-shifting payloads. It's a compact powerhouse able to move massive objects around in space conservative environments.

Federated Co-op has ordered a MillExpert Edger optimizer upgrade for the mill in in Canoe, BC .

KPP Kaingaroa Timberlands in Rotorua, NZ is upgrading the bucking line with a USNR Smart TriCam scanning and optimization system. CNC Design is managing the project and will provide controls.

Max Meileur & Fils of Ferme-Neuve, PQ purchased a USNR Chipscreen CS-26 with Cyclone.

New South has upgraded their USNR Kiln Boss systems with the latest controls at two mills in Camden and Conway, SC.

North Florida Lumber of Bristol, FL bought a USNR 84' double track hi-temp steam kiln. The mills' large boiler capacity and expanded production allowed them to add another steam kiln.

Northstar Lumber of Quesnel, BC has ordered a USNR MillExpert Optimization upgrade for their Edger system.

Pope & Talbot of Grand Forks, BC purchased a 3 head LASAR Carriage system to be installed later this year. The mill processes dimension softwood up to 24' in length.

Regulus Stud Mills of St. Maries, ID has ordered a USNR 3D LASAR scanning and log optimization system for their Sharp Chain system from Maxi Mill. The short coupled sharp chain makes lineal scanning difficult, so the mill opted for stationary LASAR scanning that captures dense 3D scan data without moving logs through a scan zone.

Rex Lumber of Graceville, FL has installed a USNR double track 68' hi-temp track kiln with a direct fired green woodwaste burner. Rex Lumber is the sister company of long time USNR customer North Florida Lumber, and cuts all SYP dimension lumber.

Rosboro Lumber of Springfield, OR recently purchased a USNR 3D LASAR scanning and Carriage optimization system with auto-rotation. The carriage was designed by Rosboro Lumber themselves and is a unique dual end dogger.

Stag Timber of Surrey, BC has purchased a USNR Smart TriCam scanning and optimization system from Optimil for their 24' Edger.

Thomas & Proetz of Nashville, IL has ordered two new aluminum panel roofs on existing USNR package kilns.

Temple Inland of DeQuincy, LA just bought a 3D LASAR scanning and optimization system to be retrofitted on a USNR Carriage. This project is on the heels of the recent USNR Edger Maximizer installation.
