Deltic Timber Makes Up For Lost Time

Deltic Timber's sawmill operations consist of two state of the art Southern Pine mills, one located in Ola in central Arkansas and the other in Waldo in south Arkansas. The mills are strategically located near significant portions of the company's timberland and process company-owned timber as well as timber purchased from public and private landowners.

In August of 2007 the Waldo operation was forced to halt production due to a fire that caused severe damage in the planer mill. The mill was able to salvage its existing planer infeed and bridge, but the planer itself was completely lost. Deltic Timber called on USNR to provide a new planer.

USNR worked hard to prioritize the production of Deltic Timber's new planer in order to meet the mill’s accelerated start-up schedule.

In early November, the mill was able to resume operations after being down for three months.

In early 2008, Deltic Timber turned its focus to the sawmill, and upgraded the existing sharp chain system. The upgrade replaces older analog TriCam sensors with newer Smart TriCam sensors that have enhanced ambient light resistance and operate better on dark wood. Deltic Timber has already observed increases inrecovery and throughput. The mill also implemented automatic feed speed controls to further increase throughput and decrease maintenance.

Deltic's sawmills produce a variety of products, including dimension lumber, boards, timbers, decking, and secondary products such as finger-jointed studs.

Deltic's history dates back to 1907 when C.H. Murphy, Sr. began investing in timberland. Mr. Murphy continued to acquire land through the years and in 1971, Deltic entered the lumber manufacturing business with the construction of a sawmill in Ola, Arkansas. The second mill located in Waldo, Arkansas, was added in 1974.

Deltic owns 438,200 acres of timberland in Arkansas and north Louisiana, stocked primarily with Southern Pine. The land consists of 202,000 acres of pine forests and 167,000 acres of pine plantations, with the remainder consisting of hardwood and non-forested land. The pine forests contain the majority of the Company's 10.9 million tons of pine sawtimber inventory and are managed on an all-aged basis.

PRODUCT FEATURE

USNR's reconfigured idler sprocket is more robust with a longer service life that requires less maintenance.

NEW LONGER LASTING IDLER SPROCKETS FOR EDGERS AND GANGS

USNR has reconfigured the idler sprocket used in the serpentine drives on your edger and gang, making it more robust and maintenance free, with a longer service life.

The old style unit used a single needle bearing, but its seal had a tendency to lose lubrication over time, requiring constant attention. The needle bearing has now been replaced with long lasting ball bearings.

The ball bearings have a shielded seal that maintains lubrication. Ball bearings spin faster and can handle a much higher loading with far fewer failures. The ball bearing design costs the same and lasts much longer.

Needle Bearing

• Seal is prone to leakage
• Bearing loses lubrication

• Replaced with longer lasting ball bearing

Ball Bearing

• Shielded seal maintains lubrication
Able to withstand more abuse
• Efficient operation easily

NEW PROJECTS

USNR says Thank You to our customers for the new orders.

We appreciate your continued loyalty and pledge to continue earning it!

JD Irving has ordered a round rail conversion for the existing carriage at its mill in Clair, NB. Upgrading to round rails provides greater accuracy, improved wear, and reduced maintenance.

Because there is virtually no adjustment required for extended periods of time, round rails effectively minimize maintenance. JD Irving in Clair, NB processes various hardwoods into consumer products including furniture, flooring, cabinetry, paneling, musical instruments, sporting goods and woodenware. The company produces both green and kiln-dried hardwood in random widths and lengths graded to NHLA standards.

Kruger of St-Roch-de-Mekinac in Quebec has ordered a 66" USNR wastewood chipper. The mill opted for the kick-out anvil option which is a safety feature that also serves to protect the equipment itself. Residual wood chips from sawmills are the main source of fiber supply for the majority of Kruger pulp and paper mills. This close link between paper mills and sawmills allows for the optimal utilization of each tree harvested. The Kruger sawmills produce a wide range of rough, dressed dry or green lumber products for the construction industry.

Pollmeier has ordered a USNR YieldMaster G3 carriage optimization system with StereoScan scanning for its mill in Aschaffenburg, Germany. The mill exclusively processes beech, delivering standardized products sorted according to application to match its customers' requirements.

Beech is the predominant species of Europe’s temperate forest, making up 57% of Germany’s hardwood forests. Pollmeier prides itself on the use of advanced technology and efficient operations that result in high quality products.

SierraPine in Medford, OR has invested in the latest DynaStar version 4.0 computerized maintenance management system to gain greater efficiency in maintenance management functions. DynaStar allows key operational information about equipment, labor, work orders, budgets, and inventory to be stored and retrieved by sawmill management to improve planning, scheduling, and purchasing.

The Medford plant, known as the Medite facility, was one of the pioneering plants responsible for the introduction of MDF to the world in the early 1970’s. The Medite operation has since developed over a dozen specialty MDF products including the perfection of the first formaldehyde-free resin system.

The Medford facility has 130 full-time employees and is strategically located in southern Oregon’s scenic Rogue River Valley within some of the finest forest land in the world.
